Hy
We have an MPLS Network for an Enterprise Customer with around 20 PE Routers. We decided to implement a Route Reflector for the BGP Peers.
Could anybody recommend me an adequate Router? We thought about 7200 NPE-400, is this oversized?
cheers

Just nice :) Me also using 7200 NPE-400 for RR.

thanks
would it be alright to take an 2821? As far as i know the performance plus the memory should be enough for this few bgp peerings. What kind of disadvantages could occure apart from saving a little bit of money.

Sizing a route reflector is more of a function of how many prefixes you are going to take in from each peer and not necessarily the number of peers. If you have multiple peers sending you the same prefix then you will have multiple entries in the BGP table for the same prefix. So you have to take this into account. Also if you are using this route reflector for VPNv4 prefixes. How many of those are you going to have per vrf? These are all factors you have to way in. A 2821 may be suitable depending on the number of prefixes and how many entries per prefix.

Hi Patrick,
right now i am also implementing a mpls network with about 40 PE Routers. We use also a 7200 but the NPE-GE1. For redundandency issues we implement 2 Clusters with 2 routers each cluster. So in your case a would also take a 7200 as the route reflector is kind of the heart of the mpls network. so i would not calculate the route reflector to small.
It mainly depends on how many routes you got there and if you have different rd for each vrf.
somewhere i should have some calculation about memory consuption...i will check if i still find it.

Roger
