Alerting Name - Max #

Hello

Does someone know the max amount of characters we can put in the Alerting Name.

We are about to enable Caller ID external from our Provider and I'm assuming that the only details the person recieving the call would be:

Alerting Name

External Phone Number Mask

Is this correct?

The maximum number of characters for this field is 30. What the called party sees is somewhat dependent on your provider. The provider will have to allow you to send out your own ANI. Some, by default, overwrite anything sent out from customer equipment with the billing number for the line. Also, the name displayed to the caller is determined by a database lookup done by the serving CO. Alerting Name is used to display "To Alerting Name" when you call another phone internally. If you want names to match up with numbers, uou will have to provide a list of number to name mappings. Such as,

1112223333 Company A

4445556666 Company B

So, when you send out 111222333 as the ANI, the provider does a lookup in their database and displays Company A.

Thanks, this does help, so lets say our provide leaves things wide open, would the alerting name show up? Or is the alerting name only for internal?

Thanks Rob, things are well, it's come down to crunch time for my relocation so it's a bit hectic.

It's possible that your provider would honor the name that you send out, but the name displayed on a phone is determined by the serving CO of the called party. If this happens to be another provider, they would most likely ignore the name, do a lookup in their database based on the ANI and display the matching name.
