Hi,

I have a network with 3 switches. I'm using vlans and I have problem with out WS-C2950-24 type switch.

I'm not able to put the switch's vtp status in server mode. What could be the problem? The other two

switches are in server mode. Thanks for your help,

Andras

Are you using extended VLANs?

If extended-range VLANs are configured on the switch, you cannot change VTP mode to server. You receive an error message, and the configuration is not allowed.

Have you tried ?

config t

no vtp mode

The default operation is server mode.

Hi,

(sorry for the delay)

I don't use extended-range VLANs. Look: (the last few):

What are your other 2 switches that are servers ? If they are bigger switches that support 1000 vlans then your problem is you did not prune off any uneeded vlans off the trunks . The 2950 can only handle 64 vlans I believe so if a server is trying to send information for more than that it will default to transparent mode , I would think there would be something in the 2950 logs indicating this but I could be wrong . Manually prune unneeded vlans off the link that goes to this 2950 . Also if you are running 3 switches you should make 1 or 2 servers and the other switch I would make a client .

My two other switches are:

WS-C2924-XL-EN(max:64) and WS-C3548-XL-EN (max:250).

You are right this is in the log:

%PM-2-VLAN_ADD: Failed to add VLAN 444 - exceeded system VLAN limit

when i try to change from transparent to server:

%SW_VLAN-6-VTP_MODE_CHANGE: VLAN manager changing device mode from SERVER to TRANSPARENT.

I do agree with Glen's post. this is the issue with the number of Vlans that 2950 can handle. Its supports only 64 Vlans and in case if gets more than that via VTP it changes itself to transparent mode.

Mmanually prune off the Vlans from the trunk or delete the unwanted Vlans from the server and it will take care of the issue.

Why do you think clearing trunks on the trunk take care of the VTP mode changing to transparenet issue?

Number of VLANs in a VTP domain is advertised in a VTP update packet and just clearing off VLANs will not change the number. However, clearing off VLANs on the trunk will help in running STP for the VLANs needed.

Yup,

Got your point Prashanth, taking the Vlan off from the trunk will not help in this issue. I think the only thing is to remove the unwanted vlans from the server.

thanks for the reply.

Thanks guys,

I will delete manually my unwanted vlans.
