Nexus VPC peer-keepalive link over FastEthernet

Hello!

The recomendations for vpc peer-keepalive link said thats for dedicated link 1 Gigabit is sufficient.

If we need to use L2 switch to connect nexuses peer-keepalive link, and we have only FastEthernet ports in that switch, is it will be enough 100mbit connection for peer-keepalive link?

Best regards!

Hi Sergey,

The vPC Peer-Keepalive only carries heartbeat packets to check remote vPC member health in case of vPC Peer-Link failure (assuming you don't use that IP interface in your data path...). 100M connection will fully work.

The vPC peer link should be robust. A recommended practice is for the peer-link port-channel to contain links off two separate modules if possible.

If this only link and if you connect to other switch that is again dependency, and it will be more likely split brain situations.

Hello!

I talked about vpc peer-KEEPALIVE link, not about vpc peer link.

Appologies i have mis read that one last conversation.

Strong Recommendations:

When building a vPC peer-keepalive link, use the following in descending order of preference:

  1. Dedicated link(s) (1-Gigabit Ethernet port is enough) configured as L3. Port-channel with 2 X 1G port is even better.
  2. Mgmt0 interface (along with management traffic)
  3. As a last resort, route the peer-keepalive link over the Layer 3 infrastructure"
