Authentication Failed while trying to send test email

Anyone experience the error message "Authentication Failed while trying to send test email" when configuring the email setting configuration on the collector?

I have entered the correct smtp server / port / email to email address / and senders mail ID, BUT I still get the error... I have a feeling that the sender mail ID that I am configuring (which is a random one) is the culprit but I could be wrong...Common Service Platform Collector 2.7-Error.png

Hello bbienaimee44,

Do you know if your SMTP server requires additional authentication?  In the "Logon Information" section, you may need to include a username and password which has email privileges.  Not all SMTP servers require this auth depending on their configuration. You may also be able to verify the requests as well from your SMTP Server logs.

Thank you,

Jarrett

Per our exchange team the SMTP server does not require any authentication. Configuring email on the collector should have worked without any issues. Nonetheless I will work with them to share logs from the SMTP server and reply back once I have this information

Hi Bobby,

Please let us know if you need additional assistance.

Cheers,

Cheri

Hey Cheri

If you have additional insights on how to resolve this, it would be great. The following is what I have done so far to troubleshoot, but to no resolve:

1. Test routing between collector and SMTP server - routing is fine

2. Authentication to SMTP server - Authentication is not required. Its actually open relay

3. Verify if port 25 is open on Firewall - This port is opened and allowing traffic

Thanks,

Bobby

Hello bbienaimee44 ,

Could you please let me know which version of CSPC you are currently on?  Can you also check if you are using a hostname or IP Address in the SMTP server setting?  If we are using a hostname we will want to confirm that the CSPC has updated DNS information to resolve.

Thank you,

Jarrett

Hello Jarrett,

I am currently running on version 2.7

In the SMTP server setting, I am using the IP address of the server. I have not tried using the hostname...

Please see attached screenshot

Thank you,

Bobby

Hello bbienaimee44,

From your screenshot, you may be able to remove the username/password credentials if your SMTP server is not needing auth.  The other settings look good.  Can you please check your SMTP server logs and see if the requests are being received successfully and if it's throwing any errors?

Thank you,

Jarrett

Hey Jeremy,

Prior to sending the screenshot I tried using the username/password and not use it, just to see if either option worked, but to no avail. I even tried today without the username and password and still received an authentication error. I actually find it ironic that without a username/password combination I am still given an authentication error. Any reason for that?

Is there a way to view logs from the collector on this matter?

In regards to logs from the smtp server, I am being told by the team that manages it that it may take some time to get logs for the collector as there are many devices communicating with the smtp server

Thanks
