Trouble assigning access to user in CSAM

Was walking a customer through adding access to some of his team via CSAM and one user gave error that he was already associated to another company name within the same hierarchy and wouldn't let us proceed.  I can share details in DM

in this case this user may be associated to their previous company for role assignment.
