Hello All,
I waswondering if somebody can guide me with the following situation.
We have two 6500 core switches and one(primary) of them is running in VTP transparesnt mode and the other (secondary) one is running in VTP client mode. I would like to change the VTP mode of the second switch to transparent mode. Would it cause any issue. I guess i have to create VLANs onto the switch. Can someone confirm this.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Jay

Hi VD,
Go ahead and convert ur secondary switch to transparent mode...as Aru and Harish said, it wont create any problem in the networks.
Just make your all required should be there as other client switches..but if you want u can modify it manually as it would be in transparent mode...

Amit

Hello Jay,
You can safely start changing the mode from from all switches, make sure that all all vlans are propogated to all access switches. I prefer to start doing the change from access layer switches and finally on secondary switch

Hello Jay,
ideally there shouldn't be any issue on coverting VTP clients to transparent. However you need to make sure the following
1. Make sure that all VTP client switches have most updated Vlan information in the database
2.VTP pruning is disabled in the switch

Harish.

Hi,
This change shouldnt impact to your network, since In the transparent mode it does not originate advertisements or sysnchronize its database with any other switches. It forwards VTP advertisements out its trunk links.
At the same time, please verify VTP Pruning if configured on the switch. If a any VTP client switch detects that there is nobody left on the VTP domain using a particular VLAN, since you have converted them to VTP transparent, it will prune that VLAN from the uplinks.

Aru

Hi All,
Thank you for the reply.
That switch(seondary) does not have VTP pruning enabled. Also there is no VTP server on the network. Primary switch is in transparent mode but some of the access layer switches are are configured as Clients. If I convert the VTP mode on the secondary switch to transparent would the access layer switches lose its VLANs?
The end goal is to convert all the switches to transparent mode.
Thank you,
Jay

Dear VD,
Thanks for the ratings...
You are really taking so much precautions before doing this thats good...but as I suggested and many others suggested you..that If you will configure the switch in transparent then it wont do any impact on current running vlans in client mode.
Vlans infos are saving in separate file that is vlan.dat file...and Transparent mode does not participate in VTP Domain for inhereting changes done by the server. So, whenever you will move ur switch 2 in transparent it will just act like a totally different switch for all the vlans that is already running within client mode. and nothing you will loose.
I think you also need to mug ur knowledge over L2 protocols...hence I am providing you some good links that will help u to understand the vlans and vtp--
