Cisco Swirch 3850 to Media Converter

I trying to connect a Fiber using a Media converter  so the connectivity its like this

Switch (Fiber) ---- (Fiber)Media Converter(Copper) --- (Copper)Switch

I have activity in the Fiber side of the media converter but not in the switch (Fiber).

What kind of configuration do am I missing or do I need two media converters one from the switch fiber and another one from the (Copper Switch) also this is what I have setup in the Switch port (Fiber)

interface GigabitEthernet1/0/5
 switchport trunk native vlan 1001
 switchport trunk allowed vlan 8,108,114-118,208,209,1001
 switchport mode trunk

The Switch (Fiber) is a WS-C3850-12S

Hello @soypablocr,

First of all, I would like to say that there is no any configuration related to the multimedia converters!

The most interesting is the way you have used it, usually it should be: switch >>>MC ......MC<<< switch, that's why they usually produce the multimedia converters in pairs and any piece of this pair will never work with the switch individually, as a result, I would like to ask you to share with us the kind and the model of the used multimedia converter!

Also, you can try to exchange the rx and tx of the fiber in any side (only one side) whether the switch one or the MC one, it usually help when we miss connect the tx or one device to the rx of the second device!

Hi
i dont believe there's config required for a media converter , its layer 1 , so there may be a compatibility issue or an issue with the converters themselves

are the ports down /down ?
can you post what your seeing on interface side

Sure here you go:

GigabitEthernet1/0/5 is down, line protocol is down (notconnect)
Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is 7001.b5c4.3085 (bia 7001.b5c4.3085)
  Description: MOXA_Switch
  MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1000000 Kbit/sec, DLY 10 usec,
     reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
  Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
  Keepalive not set
Auto-duplex, Auto-speed, link type is auto, media type is unknown
input flow-control is off, output flow-control is unsupported
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input never, output 00:30:07, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Input queue: 0/2000/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
  Queueing strategy: fifo
  Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)
  5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
  5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
3 packets input, 444 bytes, 0 no buffer
     Received 3 broadcasts (3 multicasts)
     0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
     0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored
     0 watchdog, 3 multicast, 0 pause input
0 input packets with dribble condition detected
     37 packets output, 5090 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 4 interface resets
     0 unknown protocol drops
     0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 pause output
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

ok your down /down so its definitely a layer 1 physical issue , either the switches dont like the converters or there faulty etc but its not a configuration issue
are these converters new ? have they worked before , if you bypass them as a test does it work fine , if so its definitely your converter or copper cable
these are the things i would do to rule it out and narrow down where the issue is on the path , whether cables or converters

Hi,

Please have a check on the speed & duplex mismatch may lead to the result of down/down. For example, if you connecting a 100/10 Ethernet port to a 1000 Ethernet Port (Not 1000/100/10) Port.

Do this:

  1. Command:  test cable tdr interface G1/0/5;
  2. Wait for approximately 5 to 7 seconds for the process to finish;
  3. Command:  sh cable tdr interface G1/0/5; and
  4. Post the complete output to #3
