NETAD

Hello, we currently have a single core 6509 and we want to add another one to form a vss system. Is the process the same as configuring vss and will anything happen to the config on the existing switch when we reload?

thanks

Once you convert the switches to VSS, they will reboot and come back with only VSS config.  At that time, you would need to reconfigure the VSS set to meet your need.

I recommend making a very good copy of your current configs, use notepad ++ to modify it and use copy and paste to lower the amount of downtime during the maintenance window.

The config would lost and reconfiguration based on the VSS interface style (like instead of 1/1 it would be 1/1/1) would have to be reapplied.

So after the reboot the switches will come back with a blank config?

For VSS you need 2 Switches of 6509 with Same IOS Same Supervisor/hardware  in place.

Have a Look at the below guide :

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-6500-virtual-switching-system-1440/109573-vss-migration.html

Always suggest to take backup of the config. and do this change always in change window with down time agreed with business.

Once you converted to VSS the interface numbering changes.
