How to monitor activity /usage on the switch

how to monitor the activity of the switch, or how to identify which connections are remained inactive for long time

What switch are you on ?

If it is a 4500 then it's "show int link " . They are really the only ones that will easily give you that information . Wish they would include that command on all models , it seems to be a highly requested feature .

Correct it would work on the 4948's because they run the same exact code as the 4500's .

Have you tried using Solarwinds' Network Engineer's Toolset? Using SNMP, one of the applications, Real Time Interface Monitor, will do exactly what you are looking for.
