Multiple Cisco 887VA routers boot in Rommon

djhugovic
Level 1
Level 1

I recently had to install multiple (about 5) Cisco 887 VA routers at different branch offices. They all have the problem that they sometimes boot in ROMMON!

I searches the internet, fora and Cisco bug tool, but I am unable to find the cause. I also returned some of the routers to my supplier and requested for a new one, but this does not help, because the new ones have the same problem.

The problem is, that the router does not always boot in Rommon. It seems that when the power is disconnected for a couple of days/weeks, the router boots in Rommon. When it boots in rommon, it helps to reboot the router. After the next reboot it boots with the installed IOS image as you can see below. It also did not loose it's configuration

Can someone please help me with this strange case?

Kind Regards

Jeroen

Yesterday I started contacting Cisco, but they are not helpfull at all. They keep on telling me the product is out of support: CISCO887VA-K9 product (Serial Number  FGL171520RK), but I cannot find any mention of that at the Cisco website. The guy on the phone also told me the serialnumber of the device had been changed???? What does that mean?

I bought my routers from different resellers to be sure, the routers are not from the same batch, but that does not help either.

My last help is that anyone on this forum faced the same problem. Do you recognise this problem and did you solve it? Please let me know!

The guy on the phone also told me the serialnumber of the device had been changed???? What does that mean?

Send an email to tac@cisco.com when you want to log a fault with Cisco.

1.  Can you post the router output to the command "sh inventory".

2.  Can you post the entire bootup process?

I already sent an e-mail to tac, see their response below:

Hello Jeroen,

Hello,

I can't find the end of support of the CISCO887VA-K9. There is no mention at all at the cisco website: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps11063/index.html

At the end-of-sale page of the 887 is the 887VA-K9 the recommended replacement product: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps380/eol_c51_638141.html

Can you please send me a direct link to the end of support announcement?

Your router was made in April 2013.  How can it be immediately End-Of-Support?  Before a product become End-Of-Support, there is a 5-year gap beteen End-of-Sale date and End-of-Support.   Request for an escalation because this is not right.  The TAC engineer couldn't even provide you with an End-of-Sale document.

I still want to see the router boot up (not reboot) into ROMmon.

Thank you very much for this answer. I thought I was stupid. I just resend an e-mail to TAC to ask for help with the above information.

I just tried to boot the device but "unfortunately" it did boot correctly. As soon as I captured the boot sequence, I will post it here.

If they insist that your router is indeed End-of-Support, ask them for the end-of-sale announcement and tell them to verify that date with the date of manufacture of your router.  Chances are, someone's going to go, "Oooops" and I hope it ain't you.

Hi Jeroen,
I'm hoping you get some resolution to this soon, I'm hoping the 887VA isn't eol, as I've been selling these like no tomorrow, but till now haven't come across the issue you're having. I've probably sold and installed 15 of these in the last couple of years.
It looks like they are getting confused with the 887-K9 ADSL only series that is eol.
I'll watch this thread with great interest.

Cheers
Mark
