We have several 4500x VSS pairs which were purchased recently. All are set up in virtual switch mode. Is there any way to influence the priority of the individual switches? I see how you would do it without virtual switch mode where you can set the configuration on each switch. We're looking to control which switch is active and which switch is standby.

Hi
switch priority is set under the vss domain configuration (switch virtual domain X). However as there is no preemption by default, both switches can act as active and/or standby. The priority will help for some stuff but for your specific question, it will helps when you are booting up both switches to negotiate which one is active and/or passive.
Thanks

I think what we are really looking for is to be able to specify which is switch 1 and which is switch 2.

ok. you can do that on the switch virtual domain X, you can specify switch 1 or switch 2

But in virtual switch mode, you can only change the config on the active switch, correct? Just set that to whichever switch number it should be?

Ok you already have the VSS built.
If you issue the show switch command, you will see which one has which number.
One the VSS is built, the switch number is stored in the ROMmon as a variable (VS_SWITCH_NUMBER).
Why do you want to change it?
