I have a 3500 switch with IOS of 12.0 that does not accept the " show counters " command. I cleared them and want to see what ports are not being used so I can move the users over to a new switch. What is the correct form of show counters?

If you're looking for ports being used you should be able to use command such as "show int description" this will at least tell you if a port is up or down.
Here's a snippt from a 3550;
jcs08-3550#show int description
Interface Status Protocol Description
Vl1 up up
Vl500 up up
Fa0/1 admin down down AVAILABLE
Fa0/2 admin down down AVAILABLE
Fa0/3 down down NMC Workstation 206
Fa0/4 down down NMC Workstation 207
Fa0/5 down down NMC Workstation 208
Fa0/6 down down NMC Workstation 209
Fa0/7 down down NMC Workstation 210
Fa0/8 up up AC6
Fa0/9 down down NMC Workstation 212
Fa0/10 down down NMC Workstation 213

our computers stay on all the time and we are 24-7 but people in departments might be home. These pcs will show as "up". Clear counters then whatch with show counters is what I am looking for.

Hello,
I would use
sh int | i FastE|0 packets output|0 packets input
I not sure, if it works with 12.0

Maybe you have a gigabitswitch. Then you should use
sh int | i GigabitE|0 packets output|0 packets input
