Hi Folks,
I am in the same boat as many others must be.. The time when we all plan to upgrade our Collaboration environment.
Our company is running CUCM 10.5.1 with UCCX 10.6.1 SU 1 and intending to upgrade CUCM to 11.6.1 SU1
Over the last few days I have been reading the guides, release notes and upgrade procedures provided by Cisco. However, I still have few questions bit unclear and was wondering if anyone with more wisdom would be able to shed some light.
1. I understand to jump CUCM 10.5.1 to 11.5.1 SU1 Standard Upgrade method is to be followed which is relatively simpler as the new OS installs on the inactive partition. In addition to this I have also understood that there are some major changes required to be made on the virtual machine specially when upgrading it from the previous release to reflect the changes done in the latest cucm ova template.
Changes such as Increase RAM, CPU, Network Adapter type from Flexible to VMXNET3, VM version from 7 to 8 and VMware tools upgrade.
The question is at what time these changes are required to be made? I know the guide says do it before the upgrade but can it be done like few days before the upgrade as part of the prep work? Will these changes have any impact to current CUCM version 10.5.1
2. The second question is regarding UCCX 10.6.1 SU1 Compatibility with CUCM 11.5.1 - Whether it is compatible or not? UCCX Compatibility matrix states that it is and you have to install a cucm11X compatible cop file on uccx server.
If that is the case then can the cop file be installed before hand as a prep work?
Thanks

Hi,
For 10.x and above, there is no need for any COP file, the CUCM code already contains this. The procedure would be as follows:
1. Open vSphere and connect to the host, or vCenter.
2. Right-click the virtual machine.
3. Click Edit Settings.
4. Select Virtual Disk.
5. Increase the size of the disk.
6. CUCM and vos based guest operating systems require a reboot to recognize the above changes.
7. DRS backup is suggested to guard against data corruption.

Hi,
UCCX version 10.6.1 SU1 and SU2 and already compatible with 11.x CUCM. The COP is only required if you are running 10.6(1) base version.
Regarding your first query , ideally it should be done during the same maintenance window and a DRS backup should be taken prior to making any changes.

Thanks Manish for the valueable response.
One more question which just popped up after digging further.
To be able to upgrade, 25gb of free disk space is necessary in common partition. If there is not enough space then there are free options to free up disk space with one of the options being disk resize.
I understand the guide says use the disk reallocation cop file for cucm 9.1 and earlier but do not seem to find the instructions on how to do disk size reallocation on cucm 10.5.X
Some of the unofficial forums have people saying that cop file is not required from cucm 10.X and all you need to do is power off the vm and increase the disk size from the VM environment.
Are you able to verify and confirm this procedure?
Thanks

Hi Guys,
Is there much difference between CUCM 11.5.1 SU1 and SU2 other than list of bugs fixed and couple of additional features introduced for e.g Spark endpoint management.
Thanks

Not really, that's pretty much it.

Would you mind laying out the steps you took, in general?
Thanks,

Hi Justin,
The prep doco and other step by step guide was massive but in general i followed the below procedure with cluster of three cucm and 2 imp servers
1. Upgrade CUCM Pub
2. Upgrade IMP Pub
3. Upgrade CUCM First Sub
3. Ensure CUCM and IMP pubs are in sync
4. Failover jabber users to pub IMP
5. Upgrade IMP Sub
6. Enforce all the phones to register to newly upgraded sub
6. Upgrade second Sub
7. Ensure DB replication is green
This was the first time i managed to encourage our company to start the upgrade during business hours and with this procedure i dont regret it after doing it as it was a real success. Over all it took 12 hours to do the change.
rate if this helps you

Hi Niterid3
Will you explain, how did you update VM part and please can you explain in little bit in details the whole upgrade procedure.
Our environment is similar to yours.
Thanks in advance
