802.11g or a/b/g wireless IP Phone?

Hello,

Does anyone know when Cisco plan to bring out a wireless IP Phone that does 802.11g (or indeed one that does all the bands - a/b/g?)

Thanks,

Martin.

PS For the UK Market.

At this time this is just a discussion. Currently the 7920 is the only wi-fi phone that Cisco offers, which is 802.11b.

This question may have been asked before, but I'll ask it again anyway, the 7920 wireless phone, it will work on a 802.11g infrastructure, correct? I'm sure read it'll only work on a .11b infrastructure, is that correct?

Thanks in advance for any response received!

Yes the phone will work on a G radio AP.

Just remember that a wireless voip environment is different than a wireless data environmnet. You will need to scale down the power on the AP's to match the power on the 7920, otherwise you will get to a situation where the phone can receive signal, but not be able to transmit it back to the AP.

We are waiting for a good wireless phone solution from Cisco because we have removed the ability for b radios to associate to our network, since the RTS/CTS function of B will slow the other clients down.

But by default the B phone witll work on a G network

Matthew,

Thanks! Only took a year for someone to reply but better late than never! Over the last year I've been using a 7920 at my company's warehousing facilities that have full (Cisco AP) .11b coverage or full .11g coverage but with the .11b rates still available and radio power on the AP and phone is set at 100%. Even though there's no QOS configured on the APs the phone's worked great, better than landline phones in most instances. I've also used the phone in warehouses where we have exclusively Symbol .11b APs though the quality there is nowhere near a full Cisco wired/wireless infrastructure. It's strange it should be like that as the Symbol APs (AP-4131) come with a deafult QOS/packet priority enabled for WVOIP

With stuff like VOIP phones you can read all the white papers and config. guides but I usually like to throw it up there and if it sticks and doesn't cause other network related issues then I leave well alone. If it doesn't, then you start configuring!

Anyway, thanks once again for responding.

Go Mets!

Thats funny, I saw the October date on the post, but didn't even notice the year.

I am glad it has worked out for you. The 7920's are a nice addition to the wireless network, it would just be nicer with a different radio set.

And since my Padres are out of it now, I can say "Thanks Mets, for sweeping the Dodgers!!!"

As I heard from an Cisco AM they will bring out the 7921 in December 06 with 802.11 a/b/g, supporting CCX V 4.0 and also with a color display. Additionaly a Desktop Charger with a Loudspeaker should be available.

The old 7920 has several problems (at least from my point of view and experiences) like supporting only CCX Version 2.0, warming up during longer calls and the missing belt clip. Also a Industry Style Device for productional enviroments would be great to get directly from Cisco.

There are no other wireless phones announced from Cisco other than the 7920 at this time.

The 7920 chipset can not support some post CCX items (i.e. U-APSD, WPA2, etc.), but does support EAP-FAST with release 3.0.

I went to a Cisco wireless presentation this week and the new 802.11a/bg 7921 was mentioned. They made it sound like it was being released or is coming out soon. I have an eye on this product since it'll be the first I know of that will support 802.11a considering there's now, if I'm not mistaken, 23 non-overlapping 802.11a channels meaning more bandwidth for dense deployment and also considering the issues with b/g such as the performance hit mixing the two, limited non-overlapping channels and too much contention. The Ascom i75 also looks like a very nice handset but without 802.11a support.

I can confirm that the 7921 have 802.11a and g.

The 7921 display have color and bigger than the 7920 display.

I have hold the 7921 in my hand today in Sweden, and if we will be allowed to apply the 7921 support patch to the ccm we will try the 7921 soon.

My understanding now is that Cisco is working with RIM to provide a blackberry phone that will do what everyone seems to be look for.

There is supposedly a softphone client for the RIM that will function on a 802.11g network and bridge the gap

As far as I know, SpectraLink just released the industry's first 802.11a/b/g phone. You can check out their product at:
