How do I purchase an autonomous 1260 access point?

There's a new IOS release (12.4.25d-JA) with support for the 1260 access point in autonomous mode. However, I haven't been able to find a part number for purchasing this combination. It appears to me that I would need to do the following:

  1. Purchase a lightweight 1260 (part number AIR-LAP1262N-x-K9)
  2. Purchase a support contract so that I have access to software updates
  3. Download the IOS image that supports autonomous mode for the 1260 (ap3g1-k9w7-tar.124-25d.JA.tar)
  4. Replace the 1260's preinstalled lightweight IOS image by my downloaded image.

This seems unnecessarily inconvenient, as well as requiring the extra expense of a support contract. Am I correct in thinking that I would need to do this, or is it possible to order a 1260 that comes preconfigured with this autonomous image?

Hi Surendra,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm marking the question as answered although I'm not very happy about this, as you can imagine :-(

I'll post a new question later today asking how I can contact Cisco marketing to express my dissatisfaction about this state of affairs.

Many thanks, Simon.

Hi Surendra,

I couldn't find an email address for the pre-sales team so I sent an email to the customer support team.  I'll let you know what response I receive.

Many thanks, Simon.

I received a response from the support team redirecting me to the technical pre-sales phone number (which won't do me much good today, as it's a holiday here).

I am starting to see a few vendor listings on Google for the US version of this item (AIR-AP1262N-A-K9). No sight of the European model yet, but hopefully this won't be too long coming.

Wow!! Thats nice to hear!! even i just check in the Quick start Guide... The specified the model..lemme know how it goes!!

Have a great day!!

Hi,

I know this is off the original topic, but still. Since all indoor AP's like 1242, 1262 etc and outdoor AP like 1522 will have max transmit power of 17dbm or whatever the regulatory domain allows, what is the point in buying a 1522 for outdoor ? Cant i use the same 1242 with a protective NEMA enclosure and use the desired antenna with a 1242  instead of going for a 1522 ? Similarly if only 802.11abg is required, i guess the 1242 with its max power can provide as much coverage as any of the new 1262, 3502 etc ?

regards

Joe

Hi Joe,

Yes i completely agree with you!! you can use it.. however.. We hav come up with outdoor mesh APs (specially for outdoor mesh environment).. even the 1242 supports mesh but its not completely a outdoor mesh device.. so it has its own advantages and dis advantages... its like.. comparing Racing cars with SUVs.. even SUV may race.. but its best in its own class kidding!!

But yes.. you can use!!
