New WLCS C9800-40: All Slot 2 5 Ghz Radios Disabled

Michael Mertens

Novice in wireless...I have a new C9800-40 with 8 APs. The main dashboard shows Qty (16) 5 Ghz radios, with 8 down. If I go into the APs, it shows the Admin status as "disabled". When I attempt to enable- I receive a message that "This radio is not support with the current software version and hence configuration is disabled". I just upgrade to recent code 17.9.4a. Is this a version issue, behavior as designed, or some way I can clean-up my dashboard if this is normal?

Thank you!

What is the exact complete model number of the APs?
What country are you using those APs in?
Is the 9800 correctly configured for that country?

At a guess: maybe the APs are 9136?
In which case you are probably looking at the "quad radio" feature which is only enabled from version 17.13.1 and later:

  (edited) : Ref https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html
(Check AP compatibility versus controller + software version being used on the controller)

Have a checkup of the C9800-40 controller configuration with the CLI command show tech wireless and feed the output to : Wireless Config Analyzer
Consider the above task vital ,

Marce, Thank you- I never used that tool or knew of its existence- lots of good information. Fortunately, the two errors I received are known to me and I will address. Thank you for your input, assistance and knowledge!

Rich R.,

You are correct- they are C9136s. Country Code looks good on AP vs. WLCS (US). The docs you found make a lot of sense as to why my 2nd radio is down on 5Ghz and why, when I try to enable it, IOS tells me it's not supported in this version. Thank you!
