Power given, but Power Controller does not report Power Good

Hi,

we have just installed 2 x 3650 (Cisco IOS XE Software, Version 16.06.05) in a stack and each switch has 390 watts of power available and we are only connecting 11 APs model AIR-AP280.

however, we are getting the below error for some:

%ILPOWER-7-DETECT: Interface Gi2/0/4: Power Device detected: IEEE PD
Mar 29 23:09:59.304: %ILPOWER-5-IEEE_DISCONNECT: Interface Gi2/0/4: PD removed
Mar 29 23:09:59.305: %ILPOWER-3-CONTROLLER_PORT_ERR: Controller port error, Interface Gi2/0/4: Power given, but Power Controller does not report Power Good

and when they are up and connected they have a LED status which according to cisco might indicate :

Access point operating system errors

Cycling through Blue-Red-Green-Off

General warning; insufficient inline power

What do you think this might be caused by and how can I fix this?

Regards,

1. Console into the AP and reboot. Post the entire boot-up process and let it continue for the next 10 minutes. We want to see what the AP is up to.
2. Post the complete output to the command "sh power inline <AP Port>"
3. Post the complete output to the command "sh cdp n <AP Port>".

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

Hi,
thanks for the swift response.
can you please let me know what part of the running config in particul as it is quite a large file. please find attached outout of show power inline, config of the AP interface and a show ver.

I would also like to say that it is very random some will come up and others wont, and then the ones that work will stop working.

Is the AP in port Gi1/0/8 having problem?

HI,

YES ap on that port had a problem however, I bounced the interface a couple of time and then it started working fine.

Are we looking a software bug? Or cabling issue?

Once you bounce the port working and rest of the AP working as expected then i suggest couple of steps to perform.

1. change to different port (other than 1/0/8

2. make it all possible way to remove, put new cat 5 patch lead.

Ok thanks. Do u see any issues with the switch poe budget?

  1. Command:  test cable tdr interface Gi1/0/8;
  2. Wait for about 5 to 7 seconds for the the process to run;
  3. Command:  show cable tdr interface Gi1/0/8; and
  4. Post the output to #3.

I run into the same issues with 3702’s in our environment. We have noticed a few various issues why:
1. Cable or patch is bad
2. Ethernet port on the AP/switch has debris. Canned air to clean that out
3. Patch panel has debris and canned air is used to clean that out
4. AP is faulty and has repeatedly failed to properly negotiate and join
5. AP needs to be rebooted a few times (need to monitor if it happens multiple times or else RMA

Thanks Scott.

I will give this a shot and let you know how it goes.
Kind regards,

Especially if there is a ceiling tile or anything that is dusty will cause issues. I have seen folks trying to remove or mount aps and cause a lot of dust. That will always cause you issues.
