hi team,
are you a CUCM customer, interested in Webex Calling solution and you want to understand what Webex Calling licenses you will need ? Are you are trying to map your CUCM licenses to Webex Calling licenses?
Then you are on the right place. Idea of this community post is to explain exactly this.
Step1: First of all, go to your CUCM/licensing management page to see current CUCM license consumption.
Below is an example of such a page.
Step2: Check how many CUWL and Enh Plus licenses you use.
For the new Webex Calling solution, you should calculate these as Webex Calling Professional users. So for our example : 2+48=50 Webex Calling Professional users so far.
Sidenote: there is a chance that a user that consumes CUWL or Enh Plus license in CUCM world, is a user that has only softclients (and no IPPhone associated). As Webex Calling Standard user license allows a user to have only 1 IPPhone OR all softclients, then that user could be potentially covered in Webex Calling solution with the Webex Calling Standard license (provided calling features of Webex Calling standard are sufficient). As this in my view, appears in rare cases, I will not focus on situations like this. So we assume that all these CUWL and Enh Plus users should map to Webex Calling Professional user and would probably need IPPhones + softclient(s).
Step3: Check how many Enh/Basic/Essentials licenses are user associated.
In our example these are 48(Enh), 0(Basic) and 0(Essential). Since these users have only one device in CUCM world, from device count perspective, you could cover them with Webex Calling Standard user license. But you have to check if calling features of Webex Calling Standard are sufficient for their needs. If not, then you have to calculate these as Webex Calling Professional user.
Now, for our example, let's assume that we want to provide all calling features to 30 of these users but for the other 18 of them, you believe there are more than ok with Webex Calling Standard user feature set. So, we will calculate 30 x Webex Calling Professional users and 18 x Webex Calling Standard users.
Step4: Check how many Enh/Basic/Essentials licenses are consumed by devices that are not user-associated.
In our example, these are 194(Enh), 7(Basic), 2(Essential). All these map to Webex Calling Workspace licenses.
Now it is up to you to examine whether some of these workspace devices need the Webex Calling Professional(Workspace) license or if some if these devices can be used as hotdesk only workspace devices.
Let's assume that you decide to map these to Webex Calling Workspace licenses. So we calculate 194+7+2=203 Webex Calling Workspace licenses.
So total, based on the info from the CUCM licensing page, and based on some decisions we took, these are the Webex Calling licenses we need:
50+30=88 x Webex Calling Professional user licenses
18 x Webex Calling Standard user licenses
203 x Webex Calling Workspace licenses
Done! Now you can talk with your Cisco Account team or Cisco partner to create the right Webex Calling quotations for you. They could present you various offers that meet your needs (EA or NU, Webex Suite or Webex Calling only, etc.)
A few additional notes:
1. This post assumes that you have basic understanding of Webex Calling licensing. For a overview on the subject, please check --> Webex Calling licensing - overview
1. This post does not cover Webex Calling DI(Dedicated Instance) case. Focus is Webex Calling Multitenant(MT) under flex 3 licensing model.
2. CUCM consumes licenses the moment you configure a device. So even if device is not used, if device is in CUCM database, it will consume licenses. So, it is good practice, before such calculations, to clean up your CUCM. There is a chance that there are unregistered/forgotten devices that consume CUCM licenses without reason (remember than device that was faulty and replaced it but never deleted it from CUCM?)
3. Some of you might wonder why I used the CUCM licensing page and did not use the licensing consumption from Smart account. Let me elaborate on the reasons. Although CUCM today, uses, from commercial aspect, flex 3 onprem licenses (Flex 3 Pro, Flex 3 Enh, Flex 3 Access licenses), if you see the smart account usage, you will not see info on user association. So a flex3 Enh/Access license consumed in smart account could be user-associated or not. But we can not tell this by viewing the smart account. So viewing smart account is not sufficient for us to determine which licenses are related to users (so we map them to Webex Calling Professional or Standard) or which licenses are related to devices that are not user-associated (and so we map them to Webex Calling Workspace licenses).
4. Same story as above for flex 3 onprem existing subid. Sometimes people try to understand what Webex Calling licenses they will need, by viewing the current CUCM's flex 3 onprem subid. But again for same reasons mentioned above, subid is usually not sufficient.
5.In some CUCM deployments, you might have users with EM profile only - these users do not consume CUCM licenses (if user has EM profile and no SRN configured) so you can not identify them via the CUCM licensing page. You need to locate them from CUCM configuration and calculate Webex Calling Professional or Standard user licenses for them.
6. Last but not least, this community post describes my experience with such calculations/mapping. Glad to hear any additional thoughts/aspects that I missed on this procedure.
