UCCX VM; Unable to upgrade/install VMWare Tools

Michael Gioia

Going by this, docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/VMware_Tools

Like my other collab products (IMP, CUCM, etc).. they all worked fine.. UCCX is the only one that misbehaves.

VMware tools in viClient/vCenter Web Client shows not installed.

I can right click VM and mount tools.

In CLI of UCCX, I do the usual utils vmtools *. Available options are 'status' and 'upgrade'.. N.B. My other collab products only had one parameter option at this point. 'refresh'.  Not so, here.

If I choose 'status', I get 'VMware Tools are OK.  No further action is needed'.  ? :/

Same result with 'upgrade'.

If I unmount, and issue the same two commands I get, 'The VMware Tools ISO is not mounted in the CD/DVD drive.  Please ensure that you have selected Guest -> Install/Upgrade VMware Tools -> Interactive Tools Upgrade by right-clicking on the VM from your VI Client.'

Well... I can't do interactive or automatic upgrade.. no choice.  As they are not installed .. period.

Negative... to be honest.

The other apps CLISH let me upgrade.. thought post reboot showed not running.

UCCX won't let me upgrade at all.

Hence the two separate threads..

Hello Michael,

How did you succeed to make vmtools work ? Have same problem like you. Restarting ESXi server does not help.

Kind regards.

I never did..

Just assumed had to go to 11.5.

Like the similar bug for CUCM (https://bst.cloudapps.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCux90747)

Would be nice for others to comment....

OK. Seems that it is a solution also.

Hi Michael,

Here is the related bug for UCCX;

https://bst.cloudapps.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCuy81464

VMware Tools 10.0 update on UCCX 10.5 causes UCCX active partition full.

Michael, please note that utils vmtools refresh command is available only starting version 11.x UCCX. Check the below Release Notes for same

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/crs/express_11_0/release/docs/UCCX_BK_R7697E6E_00_release-notes-for-uccx-solution/UCCX_BK_R7697E6E_00_release-notes-for-uccx-solution_chapter_010.html#CUIC_TP_V47AF70D_00

Therefore, if the utils vmtools status is showing No Further Actions Needed and still the VM running on the ESXi host is not showing the correct status, then try a restart of the ESXi host as the problem seems to be with that and not on UCCX.

Regards

Deepak

Ok.. so what you're saying is that at the version that i'm at.  'utils vmtools upgrade' is a parity function to the newer supported syntax of 'utils vmtools refresh'.

I'll try a host restart.. and let the thread know.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Have you seen the need to restart vsphere esxi under similar situations I'm in ?

Ok.. so what you're saying is that at the version that i'm at.  'utils vmtools upgrade' is a parity function to the newer supported syntax of 'utils vmtools refresh'.

Yes, your understanding is absolutely correct. Till version 10.x, the command that you need to use is utils vmtools upgrade

Have you seen the need to restart vsphere esxi under similar situations I'm in ?

Yes lot many times.

Deepak

FYI.. Deepak.. I did this.. restart vsphere esxi.. but no good. Still showing 'not running'. :/ I'm quite sure before I attempted to mount 10.# tools version and run upgrade.. it at least was running.. but showed 'Older version'. Worse than before...

Did you ever figure this out? Just did an upgrade to 10.6 and did utils vmtools upgrade and now showing Not installed. Just wondering what the fix was for you. TIA.
