8841 phone - unable to access the web interface

Hi, I have the above phone and when I use a web browser to access the phones web interface I get a message saying "refused to connect"

I have been trying to resolve this for a couple of days now but I just don't get any further.

I have reset the phone, it is using DHCP.  I can ping the phone from my computer.

Hope someone can help, Daniel.

Hi Nithin, thanks for your reply. I'm am thinking the it is a reachability problem. I have tried many different NTP servers now and CUCM comes back as unreachable every time.

Should I be making a setting in VMWare to allow the virtual machine access to the outside?

As far as I know, VMware does not have settings that could restrict reachability to the NTP server; this could be due to your network or network firewall blocking it. Additionally, if you are using the hostname for the NTP server, ensure that CUCM is configured with the domain and the DNS server IP, as this is required for the server to resolve the hostname to an IP address.

I'm still wondering why you installed CUCM for you are unable to access the phone web page. The solutions have been provided by @Leo Laohoo  if you are using enterprise firmware using the  SEPmacaddress.cnf.xml, and by @Jonathan Schulenberg if you are planning to register with a third party using MPP.

Yes, to be honest, I didn't really understand the solution they spoke of so I was trying the original solution posted. Asterisk looked extremely complicated to me and maybe above my level of skills.

To use the phone with a third-party service provider using SIP, you have two options:

  1. Use a custom SEPmacaddress.cnf.xml file, as mentioned by @Leo Laohoo . You can find several threads online or in the community on how to do this.

  2. Cisco has released MPP version phones for use with third-party SIP providers. If your phone is not an MPP version and is instead a Cisco Enterprise version designed for use with CUCM (which seems to be the case from the above thread), it needs to be converted to MPP. This requires a license and involves a cost.

When procuring devices to use with third-party providers, try to get phones with MPP firmware versions, not the Enterprise version. If possible, talk to the supplier about changing it to MPP, as that would be the best choice.

Thank you Nithin, I think I understand a little better now.  I will try to update the configuration file on the phone tomorrow at work.

OK, I downloaded TFTPD64 and set it up.  I also downloaded a new firmware for the phone and edited the .cnf.xml file to allow web access but I am getting these errors.  I can see that the firmware has not installed to the phone but I can see the basic webpage from the phone but not the admin page so that I can configure it.

Only MPP firmware has an admin web UI that you can change settings in. Enterprise firmware is purely read-only logs and status information, as I stated previously.

I just wanted to come back to this thread to say that the phone is now working.  I called Cisco with the intention of being able to buy a licence to get this phone compliant and even though they could not sell me a licence themselves I did find my way to someone who could sort it out.  He has set me up on WebEx, no licence upgrade was needed and the VoIP service he provides is only 8£ PM with unlimited calls.  Its so nice to get the phone working.  Thank you to everyone who offered their help in this thread.

One last question, and tell me if I should make this a new thread, I cannot find how to setup the CallerID.  This is so that when I call a customer, the company name is displayed on their phone screen rather than just the number.

Can anyone point me in the correct direction?  I have searched a lot for this and I think it may be a setting that an administrator needs to make for me.

So the person who provided assistance was able to get this phone to work with Enterprise firmware.

To get CallerID to work, talk to the VoIP service provider because it is no longer a phone issue.  If the VSP has a "phone directory" feature, enter the numbers exactly how the numbers are presented on the phone's display.

I'm not sure about the firmware but I'm happy to confirm this for this thread if it is useful.  Would you like the firmware version I now have on the phone?

No need.

I am almost sure the phone is operating Enterprise image.
