How do you swap an extension number?

I'm working with a Cisco Unified CM 7.0

There are sevral ip phones in the place. Each phone has a 3 digit extension tied to it. no matter where on the network that phone is plugged in that phone has the same extension. This is a problem because one phone (extension 134) is damaged and was swapped out with a phone that has extension 102. I want that phone that has extension 102 to have the extension 134 instead.

So that is my problem. I must say I am merly a CCNA and I have no idea about this voip stuff. I thought it was a simple log in to the server and make a single change. boy was I wrong. I clicked on call routing, then I clicked on Directory number and I got a list of all the DNs. I then click on extension 102 and 134. I noticed the MAC of the respective phones was in a field titled associated deives. I then disssociated both phones thining I could just associate the appropriate phones next. as soon as I hit save that entire section dissapeared. Now those extension aren't tied to any phone and once more those phones now have no extensions. I am freaking out because I can't undo this. I've clicked on literally every single option inside this server. I am in way over my head. I will include a picture to illestrate what I am talking about.

The section outlined in red is gone from extensions 102 and 134. Now when 102 and 134 are dialed you get a bussy signal. Also what is this CTI. I tried googling it and from what I uderstand it handles all the call routing? How do I get to it?

From device > phone, you would have searched by directory number, selected the phone, selected the line, edited the directory number, saved and applied the change.

Since you disassociated the number, you'll have to search by mac but otherwise it's the same process.

Thank you so much for your response by the way.

I'm not onsite now but I remember clicking on device > phone then I found the phone in the list. after clicking on it there was no option or line that I saw that housed the directory number info. as a matter of fact I clicked on another phone on that list, looked at it's configuration and that phone had no indication of an extension number but I knew that particular phone did have an extension. I took a screen shot but I seemed to have deleted it on accident.

So you are saying that when I go into device> phone I should find the line extension it is associated with?

If you've disassociated them then you won't see them on the lines of the 2 phones any longer. If you go into the phones again you can add the line though. I thought that's what you were trying to do. Sorry if i misunderstood.

I feel like an idiot. I went back to the job site today and looked at the phone through the device>phone menu. to the left there was a line that read Line[5] - Add new DN. once I clicked on that I just filled in the info and it added the DN I needed. The reason I looked over it before is because I thought the menus to the left were only used modify buttons because at the top it says "Modify Button items." This is very misleading.

Again thank you so much for your help.

I have a similar problem -

How Do I change out a an old phone (CP-7961) with a new phone (CP-8851), keeping all the phone configuration of the old phone? I have 3 phones to swap out.

Assuming you've got a recent version of CM... From the main phone config page, use the 'migrate phone' option from the 'related links' drop down. Follow the prompts. It's pretty intuitive. It's like a 'super copy' but between phone models.

Thanks will.alvord - the CM is at ver 11. Using phone migration requires downloading/uploading a file from BAT, right? I tried it but was not too comfortable, as this is a live system. I did find a way around it... did a super copy of another user with the same new phone config... and then changed a few fields to match my target user config> unplugged the phone> plugged in the new phone> the new phone registered with all the new phone settings.

I still need to be comfortable with the BAT download/upload of the bat.xl file method... as we will soon be swapping in additional phones of possibly different models...  so would appreciate additional tips on this method... and potential pitfalls to look for. Thanks again!

No. BAT is the bulk administration tool and requires you to upload .csv files. I'm sure you'll be able to find plenty of videos on youtube if you want to learn how to use the BAT. For me personally, time is the factor. If I were importing 10 or more of the same phone model with the same button configuration, I'd think about the BAT.

For a single phone, I'd use the 'migrate phone' functionality that I described. You find the phone in question, select 'migrate phone' from the related links, enter the model and mac address of the new phone and...that's it. It's literally the fastest and easiest way to copy the config from an existing phone to a new phone of a different model.

Thanks.
