DHCP Requests

Hi

My clients are not able to recieve DHCP address from the DHCP Server.Actually we have two dhcp server.we noticed that one of the scope on one dhcp server is fully utilized but the scope on the other server is not.but the requests are not forwarded to the second dhcp server.we have defined the helper-address of both the dhcp servers.

Hi Mahmood,

Can you ping the second DHCP server ip address from the switch or router where you have configured ip helper address.

Also if ping is working which confirms the reachablity we need to sniff the port connected to second DHCP server to find it is receving the request and its replying the request or not. Is it possible to sniff the port?

Ankur thanks for u r reply.i have configured the helper-address under svi.yeh i can reach the dhcp server from anywhere in the network.i think it will be a problem if i sniff the port as this is a production setup and the server is acting also a domain controller.

Let us know the toplogy that you have and all the intermediate devices between the hosts and the DHCP server. A brief diagram and configs would help.

Is second DHCP server not releasing IPs at all or for few clients IP is not getting released.

are both DHCP servers in same segment or in different segment?

Is IP connectivity between clients and second DHCP server working?

is it possible to configure a static IP from the scope of second DHCP server on client PC, just to check if client will be able to reach other resporces in LAN/WAN.

Are your DHCP servers running on Microsoft Windows Server? If so, check the server that is not handing out IP addresses, to see whether the scope is de-activated.

Also if running Windows Server, you can load Network Monitor Tools right on the DHCP server to "sniff" network traffic coming into the server's network adapter. (The software is free, included with Windows Server. Load under Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, Management and Monitoring Tools).

Are the scopes overlapping on both the servers?

ideal configuration would be to exclude 30 % of the ip address from the 1st server.

The 2nd server should be configured to release IPs from this 30 % and exclude the rest
