What is a PVID used for?
It seems to me this setting is the same as making a port an access port.

Keep in mind that a given port can be a member of mulitple vlans. If you get into private Vlans, an isolated or community port is part of a "sub-vlan" if you will. Also, with VOIP, a switchport negotiates a special type of trunk port with the IP phone for the access and VOIP traffic to be separated.

As far as I know concerning PVID since I was working with Nortel stuff, when a switch receives untagged frames, it puts them on the PVID of the receiving port. So we talk about port's PVID.

"A Port VLAN ID (pvid) is a default VLAN ID that is assigned to an access port to designate the virtual LAN segment to which this port is connected. The pvid places the port into the set of ports that are connected under the designated VLAN ID. Also, if a trunk port has not been configured with any VLAN memberships, the virtual switch's Port VLAN ID (pvid) becomes the default VLAN ID for the ports connection."
This is one of the definition you can find around.
Hope this helps
