i have a standalone video conference system that have a private ip address and natted through firewall with a public ip address , is it possible to call other vc sites using dns A records like a vc1.domain.com which is tied in the dns to a public ip address?

For a VC system to call to a URL, a DNS server lookup would be needed to resolve to an IP address using an H.323 or SIP SRV record pointing to a VCS-Expressway or similar server capable of handling/routing the call. The DNS A record does not provide that resolution for an H.323/SIP call as far as I know.

To be able to connect using hostname address, which is the A record, the end-point needs to be registered to a VCS-E, or similar device, and "include address record" must be enabled in its DNS zone, this will enable the VCS-E to lookup, and use, DNS A and AAA records should no NAPTR or SRV records be found.
So no, a standalone system cannot use this address type.
