Hello Guys,
We have some confusion about AP Bundle image upgrade.
Situation:
1.our Wireless controller is running with 8.2.166.0 version we are planning to move on 8.5.135.0.
2.we have running AP model is 2702,3702, and 1572.
3.i have read out release note for 8.5.135.0, that clearly says for 8.5.135.0 code we need AP bundle for 1570 series to bring back online after upgrade.
Workaround:
We have downloaded 8.5.135.0 image controller right now.
we have not download AP bundle image to controller yet.
Question:
1.first we have to upgrade my controller on 8.5.135.0 base image ?
2.second once my controller are up and all AP are UP except 1570 series Access point, we have to download bundle image to my controller.
so i am really confused is this process will work or not please advice.Earliest Thank you.

First check out the Cisco TAC AIROS Recommendations website and make sure you book mark if for future WLC upgrade references. In the 8.5.x train TAC are recommending 8.5.140.0
Correct you need to install both the base and the AP bundle.
The config guide: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/8-5/config-
guide/b_cg85/managing_software.html
The guide has a step After the controller reboots, repeat step 6 to step 16 to install the remaining file. So
from that the process is:
Upgrade the Controller to 8.5 and reboot
then install the AP bundle, which will probably require another reboot
Confirm everything online.
Hope this helps

Hi,
This not works for me.
A controller was upgraded from 8.3.143.0 to 8.5.140.0 a couple of weeks ago.
(Cisco Controller) >show boot Primary Boot Image............................... 8.3.143.0 Backup Boot Image................................ 8.5.140.0 (default) (active)
Now I would like to install ap bundle image because of some old (1602) APs, but I got this error message:
TFTP Code transfer starting. TFTP receive complete... extracting components. Checking Version Built. Image version check passed. Started In Place extraction of TLVs Version mismatch RTOS:8.3.143.0 AP:8.5.140.0, Installation aborted (Cisco Controller) >show ap bundle primary Primary Version : 8.3.143.0 AP Supplement Bundle : Not Installed Primary AP Image Size Supported AP's ---------------- ---- ------------ ap1g1 13120 AP700 ap1g2 13080 AP1600 ap1g4 23308 AP1850/1810 ap1g5 19076 AP1815 ap3g1 9948 AP3500 ap3g2 14972 AP2600,3600,1700,2700,3700 ap3g3 28364 AP2800,3800,1560 c1140 8836 AP1140 c602i 3864 AP600 (Cisco Controller) >show ap bundle secondary Secondary Version : 8.5.140.0 AP Supplement Bundle : Not Installed Secondary AP Image Size Supported AP's ------------------ ---- ------------ ap1g1 13192 AP700 ap1g4 25784 AP1850/1810 ap1g5 22208 AP1815 ap3g1 10168 AP3500 ap3g2 15380 AP2600,3600,1700,2700,3700 ap3g3 39336 AP2800,3800,1560 c3700 14372 AP600 (Cisco Controller) >show boot Primary Boot Image............................... 8.3.143.0 Backup Boot Image................................ 8.5.140.0 (default) (active)
I think I got error message because of the different secondary image and ap bundle version. Is there any way to upload ap bundle image for the currenty active and running wlc image without need to reboot the wlc?
I tried another WLC in our lab (type 2504), I done the same procedure, and there is no error message during ap bundle upload, works fine.
1st step: upload from to 8.5.140.0
2nd step: reboot
3rd step: upload ap bundle image
4th step: show ap bundle all (everything is ok)
Edit: I tried to upload 8.5.140.0 to the production wlc again without reboot, I set boot point to 8.5.140.0 image (which is now marked as primary), and after that I can upload ap bundle successfully wittout any reboot.
(Cisco Controller) >show boot Primary Boot Image............................... 8.5.140.0 (default) Backup Boot Image................................ 8.3.143.0 (Cisco Controller) >show ap bundle primary Primary Version : 8.5.140.0 AP Supplement Bundle : Installed Primary AP Image Size Supported AP's ---------------- ---- ------------ ap1g1 13192 AP700 ap1g2 13652 AP1600 ap1g3 15380 AP1530 ap1g4 25784 AP1850/1810 ap1g5 22208 AP1815,1540 ap3g1 10168 AP3500 ap3g2 15380 AP2600,3600 ap3g3 39336 AP2800,3800,1560 ap801 8468 AP802 ap802 9968 AP802 c1550 10928 AP1550(128MB) c1570 13052 AP1570 c3700 14372 AP1700,2700,3700 (Cisco Controller) >
So it's resolved, thanks!

We followed steps marked on release notes for 8.5.161.0:
upload Base Install image
reboot
upload Supplementary AP Bundle image.
unable to reboot since 1600 and 1530 aps are continually downloading.
Release notes specify: "...in order to upgrade, repeat Step 2 through Step 14 to complete the installation of both the Base Install image and the Supplementary AP Bundle image."
but in my case it has been very bad desition...!!

You should be able to reboot, even if the others are continually downloading. Please note, I have not tested this.

I had a similar situation where I have WLC 5508 in HA- mode, which I as upgrading from 8.2 to 8.5.151 and also I had few 1500 series Outdoor APs that required supplementary bundle image.
Cisco tech recommended the following
"First download the primary image >> Reboot the controller and then download the bundle image again you have to reboot the controller. "
BUT i read here in this forum that someone had suggested that we do not need to reboot to download the bundle image to the controller.
Thats exactly what i did and it worked just fine.
Here is what i did:
First of all I downloaded the base image to the controller and pushed that image to all my APs using command "config ap image predownload primary all ".
At this stage all my APs except the 1500 series (AIR-CAP1552E-A) outdoors got the image 8.5.151.
Some indoor APs didnot get the new image, So for them i had to reset them individually using command "config reset ap {AP NAME}" and then predownloaded the new image again.
At this stage : 8.5.151 was my primary image(default)and 8.2.166 was my backup (active) image in the controller.
And in the APS: 8.2.166 was my primary and 8.5.151 was backup image
Then, without rebooting the controller I downloaded the bundle image to the controller and pushed the primary image to all my 1500 series OUTDOOR APs and this time they all got the new image 8.5.151.
Finally using GUI of the controller, I rebooted both controllers and it took less that 5 minutes to come back and within 10 minutes all my 200 APS were associated to the controller.
Note: I didnot use the swap command for the APs to interchange the primary and backup image.
APs were intelligent and quick enough to change the image themselves as soon as the controlled came back with new image.
Hope this will help somebody out there.
Happy Days :)

Just for anyone who still hesitates on what to do:
I just updated a 5508 controller from 8.5.161.0 to 8.5.176.2 (an IRCM release) with AP bundle.
I downloaded the AP bundle to the WLC after the software download and without a reboot in between.
So download the software image to the controller, then download the AP bundle the same way, then reboot, then wait for APs to come back up.
