Intel 2200BG roaming problems

I have a user with an Intel 2200BG wireless client (driver ver. 9.0.1.9) that keeps on roaming while the user stays behind his desk. Nearest AP (G-type 1200 - 12(3)4.JA)is just around the corner. The other AP's are 30 meters away or on another floor.

I asked him to use a PCMCIA WLAN card from another vendor and the problem disappears.

I have seen the same with other Intel 2200BG's. This happens with zero config XP-SP2 or with Intel Proset.

The only thing the AP says is:

Jun 17 12:46:34.786 MET-DST: %DOT11-6-DISASSOC: Interface Dot11Radio0, Deauthenticating Station 0012.f02d.67d0 Reason: Disassociated because

sending station is leaving (or has left) BSS

Does anyone know if this is a known problem with the Intels and what could be the cause? Is signal strength normally the only factor that makes a station roam? What makes the Intel client roam away from the AP that is just around the corner?

This is a known issue with Intel: see "Wireless Client Adapter Connection and Roaming Behavior" under Known Issues & Solutions at http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/pro2200bg/index.htm.

Intel's solution is that "this behavior is normal and to be expected. The roaming behavior is designed to increase the efficiency of the wireless LAN by minimizing unnecessary data traffic. The behavior also aids in conserving battery power consumption (rolling my eyes...)".

As you have the latest firmware and drivers, other than getting a new card, I don't think there is much you can do.

I'm not sure if its the same case but we have been experiencing really close problems to compared to yours. However ours has been more complicated. Some of the 22000bg clients dont have any connectivity problems at all. The thing we found out that the clients which dont have stable connections have a HARDWARE (not software) version of 0.0.4. Did a research and this hardware version ones have been manufactured in CHINA. Couple of other clients have a hw version of 0.1.4 or 2.1.3 and they havent been experiencing any problems at all. Just keep in mind.

Have you tried removing the Intel utility and using only the driver?

We had the identical problem and the 9.0.2.25 driver helped alleviate our issue. There is a new driver 9.0.2.31 that beta tested and it seems to fix the problem all together.

Intel 2200BG's has a lot of issues with driver version 9.0.1

Try to upgrade your driver to version 9.0.2

The newest signed release is 9.0.2.31 - these are a huge improvement and have really helped out our users who were complaining of constant drops.
