Hi,

Expressway systems before X8.11.4 need a two-stage upgrade

If you are upgrading a system which is running software earlier than version X8.11.4, you must first upgrade to an intermediate release before you install X12.7 software (this requirement applies to all upgrades to X8.11.x and later versions). Depending on the existing system version, the upgrade will fail. We recommend upgrading to X8.11.4 as the intermediate release.

The above statement mentions 12.7 and not 12.7  & later or 14.x. This could be a document bug. But any upgrade from prior 8.11.4 requires two stage upgrade process.

Please check release notes for more details:

the upgrade path or the minimum version isn't mentioned in the document

For the ESXi requirements you should look at the OVA. It should include information about the requirements. Apart from that recommend you to look through the CSR compatibility matrix. It contains various things that you ask about.
