Ask the Expert: Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) Vers

Hello Anthony,

Good Question.

Only the OS/Kernel will be 64 bit, applications will still be 32 bit.

No changes to CCM process.

In Future major releases, plan is to move completely to 64 Bit and may be Multi-Thread.

Forgot to Mention

  • Fresh Installation – 64 bit OVA has to be used to create the VM, where the OS will be 64 bit RHEL 6.
  • Refresh Upgrade – When upgrading from 32 bit RHEL 5 to 64 bit RHEL 6 , OS needs to be changed to 64 bit RHEL 6 on the VM, after the upgrade completes successfully.

Worth Mentioning Here:

Once the Refresh upgrade is done, below steps need to be done for changing the OS on the VM.

This is required because, VMware uses the OS setting on the VM to know what new tools to install on the VM.

1.Using the vSphere client, shut down and power off your VM.
2.Once powered off, select your VM and click “Edit Settings”
3.Click on the Options tab, and modify the “Guest Operating System” on the right side of the screen.

It should be set to "“Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (64-bit)

4.Click OK
5.Power on your VM
6.From the status tab of VM , we can verify if the tools are up to date or not.

NOTE : The setting will not affect the upgrade. After the upgrade completes , we would prefer the OS be set properly so that when the VM tools are updated we get any updates that might be 64bit specific.

Self Care Portal - What is this exactly?  Is it another product+server or is it native inside of CUCM?

Comes native with CUCM and accessible through https:///ucmuser

Self Care Portal - Thank you.  I didn't realize this was simply a name change for CCM User Options.

Hi, Can PCD be used to upgrade 8.6 to 10.X where the 8.6 is already on UCS and would it upgrade to the inactive partition of each server?

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Yes, PCD can be used to upgrade from CUCM ver 8.6.1+. While you create the task you can choose whether you want to do the switch version immediatly or at a later point in time.

You can find more information regarding PCD in my blog below
