Caller ID shows number,name only after phone is answered. Any way to show name prior to answering? V...

Hi, I've recently taken over support of a 7.1.3 Call Manager. I have my PRIs terminating into a 2800 series router. When a call comes into desk phones the caller-id number is displayed correctly but the caller-id name does not display until after the call is answered. So my phone rings and I see 5558675309 and when pick it up it then shows "Jenny" as the name. I'd like to configure our system to show the name prior to answering the call so we can know who is actually calling. Any ideas or suggestions or additional info needed?

Are you sure the name does not appears even if you wait, say, 15 seconds before answering ?

Hi, No it doesn't matter when the call is picked up. As soon as the phone rings I see the # and I if I pick it up a half second later the name displays. The same is true if I wait after several rings, just before it goes to voice mail.

What does a 'debug isdn q931' look like for your inbound call?

CUCM should be sending the calling name to the IP phone when it is received by the gateway. If we aren't getting the name before Connect then there's not much we can do.

Are these PRI's coming in from the network? What carrier? Are you using H.323 from the voice gateway or another protocol?

Hi,

On running the debug I see the Calling Party number only for any call coming in. I ran debug for 15 min to make sure I captured enough call volume to verify. At no point does the name show up in the debug, regardless if the call is answered or not. So at what point is the name sent?

Your debug only shows the first part of the call so I can't tell where the name was delivered. There is no DisplayIE and from what I can tell of the FacilityIE there's no calling party name in it either.

Hi Phillip, Here is a larger snippet of the debug log. Are you refering to the line "Facility i = etcetcetcetc" that should contain the calling party? I am confused why the name does work so it must be transmitted at some point from the carrier, but we do not see it.

The name is coming in in the Facilities packet, on that last call, if you go down the string to the 8009, that says the name is 9 characters long, and if you feed the following 9 characters (string of 18) into a 'hex to ascii' converter, you will see that it is Sue Clark:

Hi Emilio,

I added your suggestion under each serial interface. This is under the config of each serial interface after I added isdn supp-service name calling:

" isdn supp-service name calling profile Network-Extension operation-value-tag local"

It did not change anything as the number still shows up and the name doesnt appear until after the call is picked up.

Is there a setting within Call Manager that could be the issue since the router debug shows that it does see the Caller ID name in the Facility line of the log?

Eric,

The ISDN PRIs are configured as MGCP controlled. No changes on the gateway will modify the behavior as all L3 ISDN messages will be sent directly to CUCM which will then process them. If the Calling name is being sent on the Connect or later, then there is nothing that can be done as it's a matter of when it's sent by the telco. If it's sent prior to the connect then the issue may be a limitation of the type of IP phone used. Some of the older phones, 7960/40, can't update the display during the ringing phase due to memory limitations.

One workaround would be to switch the gateway to H.323 and buffer the outgoing call setup to CUCM until the Facility with Name is received. The gateway will then insert the name in the Setup out to the CUCM and it should be displayed immediately.
