i have :
2xcucm version "10.5.1.10000-7"
2xIMP version " 10.5.1.10000-9"
2xcuc version "10.5.1.10000-7"
vcs-control X8.6.1
vcs-expressway X8.6.1
i plan to upgrade the cucm to 10.5.2su3 and the IMP to 10.5.2su2 but as i have both of each cucm and IMP im not clear on the recommended steps with multiple nodes
1-a colleague has recommended after i upgrade the cucm publisher to not restart it and to move to the cucm subscriber and upgrade it then restart both , is this correct???
2-my colleague aslo recommended that i do the same for IMP upgrade , as to upgrade the publisher first and not to restart it , then upgrade the subscriber then restart both???
3-or is it recommended to shut the subscriber down while upgrading the publisher and vice versa to the subscriber?
4-while upgrading the cucm publisher or subscriber , will they be out of service?

1-a colleague has recommended after i upgrade the cucm publisher to not restart it and to move to the cucm subscriber and upgrade it then restart both , is this correct??? ----> Yes, it's correct. You can upgrade the CUCM-IMPcluster to 10.5.2 in low peak hours and then in downtime window you can switch version & restart them.
2-my colleague aslo recommended that i do the same for IMP upgrade , as to upgrade the publisher first and not to restart it , then upgrade the subscriber then restart both??? ----> Yes
3-or is it recommended to shut the subscriber down while upgrading the publisher and vice versa to the subscriber? ---> No, don't need to shutdown any node/subscriber while upgrading.
4-while upgrading the cucm publisher or subscriber , will they be out of service? --> No, as this is minor version upgrade so nothing will be out of service during upgrade. But, during switch version cluster will restart so IP phones will reboot couple of times.

Go to OS admin page, then go to settings then click on version; here you will get switch version button.

thank you for the response , as this is my first time doing this , let us assume i dont switch to the new version and restart immediatley , when i restart it later will it switch automatically to the new version or do i need to issue the switch command to the new version (if so how?) and then restart?

By simply restarting node it will node switch, you need to switch the version manually(if you choose DO not reboot after upgrade while upgrading).

In the CLI of Publisher first run this command:
utis system switch-version
Once it is finished then run the same command on the subscribers.
Do it for cucm first and then do for IM&P.

also regarding upgrading cucm and imp ,
-should i upgrade and restart both cucm first then move to the imp and upgrade them and restart them?
-or should i upgrade both cucm and both imp then restart all of them" on a further note can i restart all the server at once or should i wait for each server to come up fully?"

You can upgrade first CUCM and then IM & Presence then start switch version from CUCM Pub and let it come up fully then proceed to switch version on next nodes (cucm sub, IMP Primary & then IM Sec) one by one.
Imp Note: You must switch version CUCM before you switch IM and Presence.
Please go through below 10.x upgrade guide as well for more information/understanding.

loading the upgrade into the four server took me very long time almost 4 hours , is it possible to postpone the switch to the new version after i installed it for a week or not? would the cucm and imp function normally during the week?

As long as you understand that any changes made between the time you finished the upgrade, and you do the switch will be lost, yes, you can do that.
