VLAN L3 routing on router or switch ?

Anyone knows the differences to put the VLAN L3 on the Router’s Ethernet port or a switch with L# capabilities ?.

Hi Luis,

On the switch you would need to create an SVI and the IP to it.  On the router you would need to create a sub-interface and the IP to it.

No it isn't because a L3 switch routes packets in hardware and a router routes packet in software so with a L3 switch and a router costing roughly the same the L3 switch will vastly outperform the router.

On the other hand, L3 switches usually don't provide all advanced routing features (NAT, e.g.).

The two technologies grew together.  The router however tends to offer more WAN interface solutions (WIC) than the L3 switch.  There is also the advantage of the logical abstraction that the router provides over the L3 switch.

What about firewall ASA and L3 switch?  I plan to add a new VLAN but not sure where to put the routing.

Hi Nelson,

If your switch is a layer-3 switch then add the svi for the new vlan on the switch.
