Edson A. HERNÁNDEZ, one of our Cisco Spotlight Awardees 2024.

Edson A. Hernandez is a systems and computing engineer from El Salvador. With more than 10 years of experience in IT, he holds several Cisco certifications, such as CCIE EI, CCDE WRITTEN, CCNP SP, CCNP DC, and CCNP SEC. Although he joined the Cisco Community in 2014, Edson has distinguished himself by being an active member since 2022 and has been awarded six times as a Spotlight Awardee by the Cisco Community in Spanish.

In these six years, Edson has collaborated with us by publishing valuable documents covering topics such as IPV6 and MPLS. His professionalism and passion for technology have given him a special place in the Cisco Community, standing out professionally in the areas of Enterprise and Service Provider. In addition, his interest in sharing his knowledge with other members has allowed him to exchange ideas and solutions on more than 90 occasions in the community forums, helping to answer questions and accumulating more than 750 useful votes received. Without a doubt, one of his strongest points is his publications, reaching 28 contributions between blogs and videos (1).

1. What are the areas of IT that you are most passionate about?

Service Provider and Enterprise are definitely the areas that I am most passionate about. I love working on high-performance architectures that not only enable critical services, but also offer scalability and reliability. The combination of advanced technology and the ability to directly influence the end-user experience is what I really like.

2. Have you obtained new certifications or are you preparing any?

I am currently preparing for the CCIE Service Provider certification. This represents an opportunity to delve deeper into key technologies such as MPLS, Segment Routing, and automation.

3. What has been the most challenging project you have undertaken or are you most proud of and why?

One of the most challenging projects was the complete technological renewal of an ISP. I led the implementation of a Cisco MPLS-based architecture using NCS series devices. This project transformed the service provider's infrastructure, drastically improving capacity, redundancy, and customer experience.

4. What are the challenges facing IT today for you, or that you notice in the LATAM community?

I consider that one of the biggest challenges in IT today is the adaptation to new technologies such as SDN (Software Defined Networking) and automation. These technologies have the potential to transform the way we manage and operate networks, but they require a change of mindset and a constant updating of knowledge. Resistance to change and lack of resources for training are important barriers that we need to overcome as a community.

5. What projects would you like to undertake and how can we collaborate with you?

I would love for the community to allow the creation of basic question banks to complement the posts in the Blogs. This would help members to evaluate their knowledge and learn interactively. I firmly believe that small practical challenges can motivate users to delve deeper into the topics, strengthening the learning curve.

6. Tell us something about yourself that might surprise others.

Something that might surprise others is that I am a big fan of the art of tattoos. I love how each design tells a story and represents a unique form of personal expression. Also, another fun fact is that I don't like wearing formal clothes. I've always preferred comfort, even at work, because I believe that productivity doesn't depend on a suit, but on your passion for what you do.

7. For you, what would encourage more experts to participate more in the community, what do we need to promote?

I think that an effective way to motivate experts like CCIEs to share their knowledge is to highlight the positive impact they have on the community. When an expert contributes their expertise, it not only helps solve problems, but also inspires others to reach new levels in their careers. Showing concrete examples of how member contributions have generated significant results could be a great motivation.

8. Would you like to participate in any live or written events? What can we offer you to make it happen?

Currently, due to the time it takes me to prepare for my next CCIE certification, participating in live events is complicated. However, I would love to collaborate on written publications or blogs where I can share my experiences and learnings. In the future, when I have a little more flexibility, I would be happy to participate in live sessions to interact directly with the community and contribute in real time.
