Hi there,

It seems like you may be hitting this bug;

When 8832 phones downgrade from 12-0-1SR3-1 to 12-0-1-12 phone does not boot
CSCvj33740

Symptom:
phone never gets IP and it never registered to call manager/the screen is blank.

Conditions:
Here is the steps to recreate:
1. The European version of 8832 phone open box has 12.0(1)SR3 as installed/default load.
2. User has installed latest device pack(available now on CCO ) on the call manager to support 8832 phone.
3. This device pack has 12.0(1) as the default load for 8832 phones.
4. Now when the phone is registered to the call manager, phone downgraded to 12.0(1).

Perhaps it's time to open a TAC case.

Cheers!
Rob

Hi there

whats the current firmware running on the phone. Also try doing a factory reset

Step 1    Unplug the phone:
Step 2    Wait 5 seconds.
Step 3    Press and hold #, and plug the phone back in.
Step 4    When the phone boots up, the LED strip lights up. When the LED turns off, press 123456789*0# in sequence.

After following the above steps from TAC, still unable to register the device 8832. However, after following the above steps the device is now visible in the call manager.

Now, the question is how to upgrade the latest firmware version on the device? the latest load information showing on the device is sip8832.12-0-1-12

Hi there

Installing device pack introduce new phone types, firmware and config files to CUCM.

Just curious what's the current firmware on your phone. If you wish to upgrade the firmware you can do as explained in the below guide.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/voice-unified-communications/unified-ip-phone-7900-series/108090-upgrade-ip-firmware.html

Before upgrading try erasing the CTL files from the phone and see that helps.

Step 1   Press Settings.
Step 2   Choose Admin Settings > Reset Settings.
Step 3   Select the type of reset.
  • All—Restores the factory settings.
  • Reset device—Resets the device. The existing settings don't change.
  • Network—Resets the network configuration to default settings.
  • Service mode—Clears the current service mode, deactivates the VPN and restarts the phone.
  • Security—Resets the security configuration to default settings. This option deletes the CTL file.
Step 4   Press Reset or Cancel.

Hope this Helps

CP 8832 is a new device and no CTL file exits on the device. When I try to reset the security settings there is no action shown on the device, it is jumping back to previous menu.

Alright...did you try doing a factory reset of the phone

Hope this helps

You should be able to switch to the alternate firmware on the phone to potentially fix this issue.

Ensure the phone will be looking for a good firmware in the device defaults.

- Unplug power cord from phone/ disconnect from Poe.

- Hold the * key while connecting the power to the 8832.

- After the LED bar light turns ON green and then OFF, you can release the * key.

- The 8832 should proceed to boot from the image in the alternate partition.

The phone should pickup up an IP and properly register, then update based on your firmware loads.

After trying the factory reset steps jwrobb had a good solution where hitting the * key and going that route fixed my issue. I was able to get downloaded to the phone the new firmware from CM and it is working.

I was able to use the * key and the 8832 will register.

If you unplug the data cord and back in again the phone will not register.

Short story the 8832 will only register by holding the * key.
