Switching

Wondering if there is a best practice?  In my current office I used just a L2 subnet between the two. a routed interface on my core 3705.  I am wondering if I can just create a vlan and configure it that way instead?

I have some 10/100/1000 2960s that have 4 one gig ethernet SFPs but sure how they would behave any differently then the the other 48 ethernet 10/100/1000 ports?Anyone know?
